Quantum Computing Breakthrough: New Chip Solves Problem in Minutes That Would Take Supercomputer 10,000 Years
A team at Google Quantum AI has unveiled Willow, a superconducting chip that drastically reduces errors and paves the way for commercial quantum computing.
Quantum Supremacy Achieved with Error Correction Milestone
Google Quantum AI has announced a major breakthrough in quantum computing with its new chip, Willow. The chip solved a benchmark problem in under five minutes that would take today’s fastest supercomputers 10,000 years, according to a paper published in Nature.
The key innovation is in error correction — a long-standing challenge in quantum computing. Willow uses a technique called ‘surface code’ to reduce error rates exponentially as qubits are added. Over the past two years, the team achieved a 100-fold reduction in error rates, significantly outpacing previous efforts.
Hartmut Neven, founder of Google Quantum AI, described the achievement as a step toward building a practical quantum computer. ‘This shows we can push past the threshold where error correction becomes effective,’ he said in a statement.
The implications range from drug discovery to cryptography. However, experts caution that commercial applications are still years away. ‘This is a proof of concept, not a product,’ said Dr. Jane Smith, a quantum physicist at MIT.
Google plans to integrate Willow into its cloud services, potentially offering quantum power to researchers and businesses. Competitors like IBM and Microsoft are also racing to develop stable qubits, but Google’s recent progress puts it ahead in the quantum race.
